George Lopez Is Facing Backlash After He Made Harsh Remark About Ralph Barbosa

George Lopez, an American comedian, was chastised online for disparaging 26-year-old comedian Ralph Barbosa.

Steve Trevino interviewed the 61-year-old for an episode of the OMG Hi! podcast that aired on February 6, 2023. The two talked about Latino humor, TikTok trends, Latino dads, and LGBT sons, among other things.

Trevino mentioned Ralph Barbosa and spoke about assisting people to gain recognition in the industry, all while praising Lopez’s legacy and a self-made success. The inclusion of the young comedian’s name in the conversation, however, did not sit well with George Lopez, who dismissed Barbosa.

Trevino stated:

“Ralph Barbosa, this kid is blowing up right now? And I feel like I’m praying for him. I don’t hate him. I want the kid to have a good time because we had such a hard time.”

George Lopez responded by saying:

“[I’m not familiar with him]” I have no idea who he is. What country does he come from? But no one knows who that motherf*cker is, so why bring him up?”

He then asked those around him if it was appropriate for him to say that, adding:

“How come you keep bringing up his name when no one knows who he is?”

Off-camera, he even asked if he was being too harsh on the 26-year-old comedian.

When Steve Trevino, who appeared to be troubled by Lopez’s remarks, expressed a desire to watch out for others, Lopez responded by saying that everyone must look out for themselves. Following the virality of George Lopez’s remarks about Ralph Barbosa, Twitter users chastised the comedian for making such comments.

Several people pointed out that Lopez should remember how he built his own career from the ground up. Others chastised him for not promoting the emerging Latino comedian and were offended by his comments.

Ralph Barbosa responded to Lopez’s remarks on February 9 by posting the same video footage on his Instagram account.

He captioned the video with emojis of laughter:

“People keep sending me this first video. It’s okay, sweetie; the future has arrived.”

Ralph Barbosa was born in 1996 in Dallas, Texas. He is regarded as one of the “shyest attention hogs” and is well-known for his relaxed comedic delivery. The rising comic won the 2019 Funniest Comic in Texas category as well as the stand-up competition at the 2021 New York Latino Film Festival.

He rose to prominence after appearing in HBO Max’s Entre Nos: The Winners 3. He also appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show and posted his first Instagram photos. As of this writing, George Lopez has yet to respond to the outrage over his statements.
