Backstory

Burch was a massive and hard-earned recruiting victory for South Carolina in the class of 2020, a five-star local recruit ranked No. 8 overall in the 247Sports Composite. That made him the Gamecocks’ second-highest-rated signee ever behind Jadeveon Clowney.

Burch played a rotational role in his first two seasons, averaging about 25 snaps per game, before earning a starting job in 2022. He recorded 60 tackles, 7 1/2 tackles for loss, 3 1/2 sacks and was credited with 29 QB hurries on the year by Pro Football Focus, second-most in the SEC.

Oregon generated the most buzz in his recruitment early on based on Burch’s relationship with coach Dan Lanning, who was Georgia’s primary recruiter pursuing Burch back in 2019. — Olson

Ducks’ portal recruiting keeps rolling

Lanning and his staff were aggressive about finding key starters and boosting depth going into Year 1 at Oregon, and they’re off to another strong start with their portal recruiting for 2023.

Burch joins a transfer class that includes coveted offensive lineman Ajani Cornelius (Rhode Island), wide receivers Traeshon Holden (Alabama) and Tez Johnson (Troy), offensive lineman Junior Angilau (Texas), linebackers Jestin Jacobs (Iowa) and Connor Soelle (Arizona State) and defensive backs Khyree Jackson (Alabama) and Evan Williams (Fresno State).

The Ducks are loading up to make a run at a Pac-12 title and probably aren’t done upgrading their talent via the portal. — Olson
